Listening to the Fetal Heart
Starting at around 24 weeks, the fetal heartbeat may be heard with a Tummy Scope. The heartbeat will be faint and is best heard over the baby's back, which often seems firm when you feel around the uterus. It may be difficult to hear the fetal heart by stethoscope if the baby is in the wrong position, the mother is overweight or if the placenta is on the front wall of the uterus.
PLEASE NOTE: Every pregnancy is unique and hearing the fetal heartbeat with ease will depend on many factors, such as the position of the baby and how she/he is situated in the womb. Babies change position in the womb so sounds may be easier to detect on some days more than others. Also, as the pregnancy progresses the baby's heartbeat will become easier to detect. You should always consult your physician or obstetrician with any questions or concerns regarding your pregnancy. Feel free to bring your stethoscope along to a prenatal visit!
